Monja Gentschow draws, always and everywhere

Monja Gentschow calls herself a ‘desartist’: somebody in between a designer and an artist.

Monja Gentschow studies Visual Communication at the Kunsthochschuhle in Berlin-Weißensee, but according to her parents, she was already drawing before she was even talking. For her, drawing is a cure to boredom. She always carries a sketchbook around and draws pretty much everywhere and all the time because it keeps her perfectly happy and entertained. On top of that, every half a year she takes all the money she has earned and goes to a foreign city for a month on her own. The rules are: Spend all the money and fill one sketch book. Once she returns to Berlin all those impressions affect and motivate herself and her work. Although her drawings are not always as colorful as you might think they would turn out, one of Monja’s friends says everything she does is ‘powdery’.  She likes to work with old paper, old magazines, watercolor, crayons and crêpe tape. Luckily her work didn’t remain unnoticed, in the meanwhile Monja is doing all the artwork for one of her friends music label ‘Keinemusik’, she’s designing logos, t-shirt prints and album covers for shops and bars. As she doesn’t like computer fonts, she has developed her own trademark with ther handwriting. Monja’s newest private project is called “Monifaktur/Monifactory”: every Thursday www.ignant.de published some of her rather rough and unfinished drawings about facts and non-facts in image and word.
